The Impact of Screen Time on Children’s Health

Technology has continue to advance and children are now more than ever in contact with screens. From having mobile phones, tabs, laptops, and computers to watching television, children are spending a lot of time in front of screens which has become an issue of concern to parents, teachers, and physician.

There are social and academic outcomes of children who spend a lot of time watching screens but the most apparent one is physical. In this case, a habit that results from extensive TV watching is inactivity during which the body takes on extra calories leading to obesity. This is especially the case due to a sedentary lifestyle, which acts in a negative way together with snacking while watching screens. Moreover, the sitting position while using the screen for a long period attracts poor posture and eye strain with healthier and potentially vision complications in the long run.

To minimize such effects, it becomes possible that one has to limit the hours they spend in front of the screens. This means that through the encouragement of the extension of regular breaks, extending the physical activities and activities in general that do not involve screen use, it would be possible to still maintain the health of the children. The parents and the guardians of the children have specific importance in ensuring that the children set good screen time habits and to set the right behavioral modifications.
